The fast answer is anyone who rents their home! if you value your stuff you need to get this protection. You are not covered by the landlord or antone else. If you operate a business out of your apartment you may need to purchase additional commercial insurance to protect your business interests.
One time, my apartment got water damaged because apparently water was dripping from upstairs to downstairs. It wet my carpet and soaked my bed, what a mess. But I didn't pay a dime for my personal items that were damages thanks to having renters insurance. I just called my agent and they took care of everything.
